Removing paint to reveal original colour?

I've just bought a 1987 T25 hightop hand painted with a brush, complete with brush strokes and hairs.
Apparently its green tank paint!
Well it's flaking off in parts and revealing a shiny metallic dark red paint job... now I could wait forever for the rest of the tank paint to fall off but the van might not make it, or is there another way??
here's my guess... sand it down with something fine til I hit the red, then superfine sanding+rubbing compund and a polish?
Anyone got any experience of this?
Thanks in advance
Daz

I chose it because it was under £2k, and actually I kind of bought it in the dark!.. heart before head perhaps.
but point taken though, if i'm gonna put in the effort perhaps I should sand and repaint in a colour I really do choose
maybe with that rustolene I keep hearing about?

If it is your hobby past time, go for the "paint your wagon with a roller" option, when I need to I will (I have printed the instuctions out a couple of times now), but I kinda like all the flowers and like painted on dylan.
if you get someone else to paint your van it would have been cheaper to buy one for 3K with a good paint to start.
