Hello all,

I've got a non working temp gauge, the light flashes on turning the key in the ignition and the fuel gauge works so I know theres power to the dash.

Been driving round without it working as I figured that if the van got hot then the light would still come on as it was showing power (correct me if i'm wrong!)

Got a new coolant temp switch from GSF on my way past last week and decided to fit today, no luck.

I can see a switch that is on the side of the thermostat housing but this has a different connecting end to the one they gave me, I believe there is another one but after looking at the wiki I still cant work out exactly where it is, can anyone help please? thanks Jud.

first off please give engine details in your posts>>> We can guess its not an air cooled
Assuming a petrol 1.9 or 2.1... temp sender is on the front of the thermostat housing...
And NO the light wont flash if the engine overheats and you dont have a working temp sender.

If It was anything like the one i just done on a D reg van it was the sender that faces the front of the van that i replaced.
GSF supplied me the wrong one to start with as the plug connection didnt fit. Finally got the correct sender from GSF. If I remember correctly there is a circlip holding then plug on then another one holding the sender in. I pulled the old one out and shoved the new one in. Lost a small amount of coolant. I made sure I had some safety goggles on though as there is a chance of getting coolant in your eyes

Obviously not the correct way of replacing it i guess but it worked for me!

PS: Have heard some bad things about GSF senders but so far so good on mine.

hello again sorry my bad, 1.9 watercooled engine.

the temp sensor lookes awfully funny and has a screw thread one end and a silly looking fitting the other end, i think its the wrong one myself.

Have a look on Brickwerks, there's photos of the different senders

The one on my C reg van looks similar to this

the blue sensor you removed is the carb heater switch not the temp sensor I did this too. the temp sensor is black and is not on the side but at the back of the thermostat housing that sensor is black and the one you need to change, I hope you still have your blue sensor to put back in.

Im driving my van around without a temp gauge and its driving me insane!!!!

I may be wrong, but I think the spade connector slides around the round the stud at the top of the brickwerks sensor in the pic. It does on mine anyway... if you imagine the sensor being upright, threaded part at the bottom - the spade connector will slide on from the side over the round stud. I can't explain it any better than that really but hope that makes sense

take the wire from the temp sender and with the ignition switched on short the cable to earth, you should get full deflection on your temp guage
this proves your guage is ok

ok i changed it no joy so i'll try the taurus method.

this is something like the 3rd thread recently to do with the 1.9 DG overheating, and IMHO the ONLY definite way to tell if your coolant is running at the right temp, and also if your sensor or gauge is playing up, is to run your engine with an actual thermometer in the coolant.
