Hi,

I have an intermittent fault with both the fuel and temperature gauges. One day they both work, then they dont, or then they start working again.

I used to be able to give the top a slap and they would start working again but now that technical solution doesnt work anymore...

Im due to drive down to Cornwall at the end of the month and ideally wouild like these both functioning for that little 300 mile jaunt.

The fuel and temp guages are fed via the voltage stabiliser mounted in a socket. each gauge then exits at the multiconnector. Sound like you have a poor connection or a fault that has finally become permanent (rather than intermittent) either at the stabilsier or possibly at the multiconnector. If the indicator Led,oil pressure Led and charge led function then you have the necessary 12V getting to the dash. First, check that the edge connector is fully pushed into place.

Fuel and Temp gauge do not rely on a earth connection at the dash (coolant LED does but not the gauge). Might also be worth checking the nuts behind the gauges are fully tightened and that you have a 10V supply to both guages by measuring the voltage at the temp gauge nuts (access by removing the dash cover). Use the centre nut of the temp gauge as an earth point for voltage readings. If you have 10v (or approx.) then its time to remove the dash and inspect the membrane tracks at the edge connector and for continuity to the gauges. If you do not get a reading of 10v (or your measurement is considerably lower) then the stabiliser will need to be checked. It is mounted in a socket and the legs can tarnish badly but the dash will need to be removed and ideally tested on a bench.
