Ignition problem

Everytime I start the van the ignition is getting stuck meaning no lights or electrics until I turn the key back a tad.
Anyone had this problem before? I thought I would ask before pulling it all apart.
Cheers Rob.

Ignition switch faults are pretty common but thankfully fairly cheap and easy to fix. The switch itself is common across much of the VW range around this time, they cost under a tenner and take about 35 minutes to fit.
Remove steering wheel
Remove plastic column cowlings
Remove switchgear (3 screws and multiplugs)
Remove the shear bolt from the ignition barrel housing, pull off the ignition switch plug and pull the housing up/off the column
Undo the one srcrew and replace the switch
Rebuild

Note* take off the steering wheel whilst in it's straight ahead position, refit the same.

Also make sure the earth connector at the bottom of your steering column is working ok. Give it a rub and that :ok

just changed my ignition switch. It burnt out last week and had to be recovered by RAC. No other damage or fire luckily and had to get new connector as well - still available from vw, same as golf. I guess it just wore out after 23years! I was a bit concerned when I smelt burning, next I am fitting one of those battery isolators that a lot of people on here fitted last year. Rob, hope you are keeping fit and working hard?

Its not an electrical problem its mechanical.
It just seems to have become slightly stiffer. Where as normally the second you let go of the key it springs back, it seems to be sticking.
Then no lights, heater, horn, ect...
I was wondering if a tad of oil down the barrel would make a difference?
Hi there Ray......hope alls well.

Yes mate.....stiffer because it has got hot, dried out and partially melted due to tarnished and weak springs and connections.....sorry mate..electrical...really, just bung a new one in, don't bother with switch cleaner.

Like Martin says just replace the white plastic switch , but have a good look at yours first as there are a couple of types , some have more connections than others , get it sorted ,
