:?: A friends T25 1.9 watercooled (84 I think), has just started showing a new problem. The LED on the water temp gauge has started flashing from startup and staying flashing for about 10 minutes. Mine flashes for ten seconds... Anyone know what this might be saying..??.. I have checked all my manuals and no answers so any help appreciated!! :P

low water warning....
this light is both the low water warning and over temp warning.

is he checking the level in the header tank or the top up tank.....
the header tank needs to be to the brim, the top up tank to the level of the fill hole
if it is neither low on water or over temp, it maybe a wiring issue, either bad connections or cracked or brocken insulation.

could also be the sender in the header tank, which are not expensive

a broken wire will leave the light flashing. If it doesn't stop or indeterminate amount of time I would suspect dodgy wiring. Mine had a badly made crimp.

also possibly partially corroded contacts on the sensor, if left in air for a long time they seem to become poorly conductive, a quick clean with wire wool or a green pot scourer does the trick, but it's most likely the level is low in the expansion tank and it's only when the coolant has expanded that it's getting to the minimum right level - possible lack of seal on the system too if it isn't topping itself up from the top-up tank when the engine cools down, maybe bunged up tank cap or crud in the bottom of top-up tank.

seems to be a common problem if you read some of the vw forums.had the same problem myself for a time,i found that if i turned the engine straight on the light would flash for ever.but if i turned the ignition on and let the light flash for about 1min then started her up the light would go out no probs
