How do I find the tdc pointer on a syncro 1.6td

I've got the Vanagon official factory repair manual and the Just Kampers manual - I just cannot find "the plug in the transmission case, to be opened with a sawn off plug spanner" to see the mark on the flywheel to align with the pointer. Some guidance on where to look would be appreciated.

You will have to remove one of the breather pipes, looks laike a radiator pipe going straight up from the bell housing.
Remove pipe, look down the tube you'll see the pointer.
