When I drained the oil from my 2 litre Aircooled CU engine over the weekend, I found that it had increased in capacity to about 5+ litres rather than the 3 I would have expected and smelled stongly of petrol! (no wonder "oil" was coming out of places/seals that it shouldn't!)
Time for a new fuel pump I think... A new mechanical one is between about £60 and £80 depending on where from - but an electric one could be a fair bit cheaper if I can get the right one at the right price. My question is how critical is the pressure delivered? - the stock mechanical does 4psi whereas some electric ones go up to 8psi or more - anyone know what pressure the stock Solexes can tolerate?

When I do the conversions, one of the upgrades is an electric fuel pump, check out bigboystoys and look at the Facet electric pump, I think JK are stocking these now too, it really does make a difference, about 35-40 UK pounds.
However you may not be catching the route cause, please also check that the float levels are correct in your carbs and that the needle valve are sealing correctly, if you are getting petrol in your oil this could be a sign of engine wear / bad combustion / flooding carbs and a number of other factors too.

Thanks for your very helpful responses to both my tech issues - I will have a go at changing the choke flap.
I've been dubious about the state of my engine for a while - oil pressure is low once the oil is warm (not helped by it being thinned with petrol I know!) Even tho the compressions are all between 150 and 170 psi (I rebuilt the top ends 35k miles ago) the bottom end is at 150k miles and both crankshaft seals have been leaking for months so I've decided to get a total rebuild - I dropped my "spare" lump off with Laurie Pettit last week and I've removed the original just this weekend. I'm stripping off and refurbishing all the ancillaries and tinware over the next few weeks. I'll get a Facet fuel pump, try to check the carbs and if I'm in any doubt about them I may get you do give them the once over.
