Hi All,

I'm about to take my 1.6TD 1986 for its first full service which is going to set me back 450eur. I also need to have the clutch slave replaced and so I'm prepared for an expensive job. The thing is I know from the history that the timing belt was last changed in 2000 which was 90000km ago. Do you think I need to change it this year? I can really do without the cost and would prefer to get it done next year if possible, but obviously I don't want to take the risk if its too risky... So question is what is the recommended KM in between belt changes and what would most people on here think is acceptable? If I wait until next year then I reckon I'll be giving it around 100000km..

Personally I would get it done, why not have a go yourself? Buy a hanyes you find these vans a lot cheaper to run if you DIY.

Cheers, I wouldn't mind learning and having a go myself but I don't even have axel stands and the van is just on a narrow road out the front. I'm attempting to fix anything I can get to easily enough and then I'll tackle the rest when I get my own place and a garage! I was planning on just buying the belt and tensioner from JustKampers in the UK who will post here for £15 (unless you knew anybody here or Germany that may be able to supply??). I'll then just take it along to a VW camper specialist near me and just ask them to fit it. Should be about 2 hours labour don't you think?
