1y in mid transplant question

Hello,

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to help me. I'm mid way through swapping my 1.6d for a 1.9 (the 1.6 is showing lots of signs of not being happy, reluctant start, smokey, drinking oil like a loon etc. etc.)

I've got the 1.6 lump out and I've got a 1.9 seat ibiza 1y to go in (about 10 years younger and owned by a fitter)

I'm mid way through swapping the sumps I've noticed that the fly wheels are significatnly different looking and there is a bit of tin behind the back of the flywheel on the 1.6 engine that sort of marries up to the gearbox bell housing.

I've had a rummage through the wiki and can't find 'owt about it save for a synchronaut asking a similar questiom..

what I want to know is how to get this bit of tin from off of the 1.6 it's behind the flywheel and I need a bit of guidance as to how to get the flywheel off.

I've already taken 6(or was it 8?) allen key bolts out and taken the first half of the clutch off (I think that's what it was!) and now a bit stumped.

Other than that it's all going swimmingly (so far)

If you can lend a hand I'd be very grateful! I've ground to a halt and I was hoping to get most of it done by tommorow afternoon!

(to be honest it's nice to be back in the warm)

cheers

Dave

Your going in the right direction - you need to take off the clutch and flywheel from both engines, chuck away the 1Y ones, and fit the T25 ones to the 1Y. When you have the flywheel off - change the tin wear too - because you're right, it mates up to the gearbox nicely.

Ive never had a problem removing the flywheel. After removing the clutch (all of it) there are about 8 bolts. Undo these and the flywheel should pop off.

Good luck,

Ringo

that's ace ringo thanks!

the other bit of the clutch fell of while i was looking at it...
revealing the eight bolts.

I'm now trying to get the bolts out which is mostly involving me turning the flywheel and swearing.
I can't get enough torque on the bolts to undo them (they're not left had thread are they? :? )

Is there some trick you can recommend to hold the fly wheel still (I've only got limited equipment but I'm Keen!)

Many thanks in advance

:)

Bolts are regular not left hand thread - just tight, best to use a 15mm black iron socket.

Do all what Ringo said and remember the back plate.

DON'T FORGET nose end spiggot bearing (goes in the end of the crank) to marry up to the spiggot shaft in the gearbox otherwise you'll be doing a gearbox change.

Thanks for that fellers.
I've now got both fly wheels off and the tin back plate.

I've come in to have a look at spigot bearing info.

It was recommended that I bought a spigot bearing which I've done, there doesn't seem to be one in the seat Ibiza which now when I think about it the clutch was completely different so that makes sense!

The cold is getting to me I think...

My father (ever the optimist) said "of course once it get it all back together there's no way you'll be able to line up the shaft and spigot bearing..."

Is he right?

I don't think so I don't think he's experienced the marvels of german engineering for the dirt end...

thanks again for your help, I'm off to the wiki to read up on spigot bearings...

mind you, you might know the answer to this one

"which way round does the spigot bearing go?

It's got a little rubber seal on one edge and not on the other so I figure that's probably important...

My turn, my turn, go on let me help. Is your next question going to be...................What sump gasket do I use ? Aha there has been loads written about this. The 1Y sump has a "baffle plate" with a thick rather nice gasket. Some 25ers have used the baffle with the thick gasket but when I tried this I could not get the two lower bell housing bolts in as they did not line up (sump is about 2mm lower), some on this forum had the same trouble. It is a bit contraversual as to whether the baffle is a good thing or not as the engine it was on sits upright and your new set up sits at 27 degrees. I dont know the answer to this but I used the original thin gasket and no baffle and have done lots of trouble free miles.
Nearly there mate.

Next episode dipstick !

No no Ringo, you are the daddy. Very often the first to offer advice and it is very much appreciated. you have given me hours of entertainment on here and certainly put me on the right road more than once. Really going to make the effort to meet more of "the gang" this year.
Oh yes, and you Weldore Dave, where are ya ?

Hee hee - be good to meet you at last Pete!

Regarding the spigot bearing - i think Em is right. Least thats the way i always do it.

It is a bit of biatch getting the gearbox shaft in that spigot bearing IMHO. Take your time and line gearbox and engine up (use ratchet straps for fine adjustment) and you will find it just pops in. Sometimes a bit of brute force will save you a bit of time but i dont recommend it....
