New Noise!

Help!! I haven't had the van long and it's my first so bear with me...

I have done about 800 miles since picking up the '86 'velle with a1.9 WBX and no trouble at all.

I moved it yesteeday off the drive and a massively loud pinking type of noise eminated from the engine.

further inspection souws nothing to be flapping about in the egine bay.

I put some oil in it (but was about 3/4 full) and it didn't make any difference.

i've heard hydraulic tappets can be noisesy but the noise is so bad that i don't like to leave the engine running longer than I have to...it's that bad

Any ideas?? :? :(

how long was it parked for?

When the tappets rattle they really do rattle.

Its normally a couple of weeks at least for the tappets to drain down unless you have a poor quality oil filter (not man or vw).

that sounds bad - meaning expensive

not sure what the oil filter make is it's blue!!! and looks a bit old.

I bought a new one from JK think it's BOSCH. if change the opil and filter will the noise go away???

Sounds like a pebble in a tin can...Neighbours looking through their curtains. Welcome to the world of the flat four.
A few words of advice if a light comes on cover it with the window screen cloth and if a sudden sound appears turn the radio up. 9 x out of 10 it wont be there next time you get in the van. If it is then you may have a problem.
My bus sounds the same if stood for a while or if i have just done some motorway work and the van has stood for a few days. The oil is hot and thin and drains to the sump, just run the van for 10 mile and all will be tickety boo

Oz

thanks - i was impressed with this van as it was the quietest flat 4 i'd heard :o . Except maybe a scooby.

Also own a '72 bay with type 4 1800 with the proper pebble in a tin can thing!! No hydraulic tappets though.

The WBX seems more refined but now it louder than the air cooled!!

It's supposed to have only done 50K miles as it was a recon. not drpping oil or water or overheating or anything!! :o

i say recon...the history is sketchy MAD in Bristol fitted a 'new' engine about 50k miles ago. so i was reliably told by the previous owner. i have a document for it too!!

Hey don't worry too much ( just yet )

Mine did exactly this a day or so ago when I started it up in the morning.

I too thought it was too loud for a tappet, but as I was some way from home I just carried on, driving very gently, after about 15 mins it suddenly shut up and hasn't done it since !!

A bit strange though, any comments anyone ?

p.s. - how can you tell if you have hydraulic / solids ( other than when hydraulics suddenly start to make noises, then stop again of course !! )

Get out and go for a drive. If it doesn't shut up with the ticking THEN worry.

Agree...these thing s happen for a reason ...mechanical stuff just doesn't do wrong unless there is something not right with it??!!
