Is it 'lumpy' all the time, or just until it warms up?
There should be three wires off your carb (well, at least there is on my 1.9, but it does look reasonably 'home made in parts'!). One is the fuel cut off solenoid (you'll know if this isn't connected as your van won't run). The other two are heaters - one for auto choke, the other for the inlet manifold. All earth through their screw in connections, so all should be getting +12v through the wire.
If the van is rough when cold, suspect one of the heaters not working, allowing the carb or manifold to ice up (especially in cold damp weather), or keeping the choke on for too long.
With regards the vacuum pipes, one should go to the dizzy, the other to the air filter box. Don't think it matters which goes to which, as long as they are both connected and don't leak.
Have you checked the gasket between the carb and manifold?

cheers for that its mainly when cold or damp when its worse but sometimes when warm it takes a long time to fire up just keeps turning over then goes lumpy , get it on an open road then its gone

hmmm, sorry this is not answering your question, but the previous reply just got me thinking, on my 2.0 cu engine the wires for the auto choke fuel cut off solinoid ect are all the same wire! is this normal? or should the power only go to the choke for a few mins, then cut off? if this is the case then it obviously isnt on mine, cos it would cut the power to the fuel cut off!!!
