Glow plug light stays on

I suffered the misfortune of having to replace the cylinder head gasket. Job done by a competent mechanic who has some knowledge of Dubs.
Since then, whenever I turn on a cold engine, the warning light goes on and stays on. The engine will turn and fire and the light then goes out. As usual there is no warning light on a warm engine start. I mentioned this to the mechanic, who didn't really have an answer.
Two other things have arisen. The engine exhaust now emits quite a cloud on starting, which it rarely did before. The van has been more difficult to turn over and the battery, a year old, is now on charge.
Any clues as to what is happening, please.
Richard

How long does it stay on for? Ever?
I posted a flow chart for trouble shooting glow plug problems on here last week

On this tread.

Check the engine temp sender to see it its still connected, not sure which engine you've got so I don't know where it would be on yours.
It could also be the glow fuse relay which is how the glow plug timing is controlled, might be worth removing it and cleaning up any connections

Mine was doing this abit and i looked in the black box where the relay is for the glow plugs are. Melted wires in about three places, couple of careful hours with some new wire, crimps and heat shrink sorted it out.

Thank you both, it's on the back burner for a couple of days whilst I indulge in some marmalade making. I'll let you know (the glow plug that is, not the marmalade).

Check the relay, normally the the colder the engine the longer the glow plugs will be connected but on a hot or warm engine they should not come into play
