Do I need an oil cooler?

Our Gina, a 1988 1.6TD Hi-top will be pulling a Cabanon trailer tent for this seasons camping holidays.
I've had a poke around the forums, and I'm still not sure if she will benefit from an oil cooler.
Cheers in advance!!

I wouldn't have thought so. trailer tents are not as heavy as caravans
unless you plan to go somewhere very hot and do hill climbing with it attached.
Still it can't hurt
you must have a big family if your towing a trailer tent.. Does no one sleep in the van?

It's oil temps that kill engines, the 1.6TD is fairly overworked as it is, it can only benefit from a oil cooler.

make shure you fit a thermostat between engine and your new cooler

Many thanks for your replies.
The camper and trailer tent combo is just for getting the best of both worlds if you like.
The TT as a base for a week or two, then we can explore with the van and kit! The van is used for outings and long w/ends mostly though.
Anyway!! I like the idea of an intercooler if it will give the engine an easier time.
Any recommendations of size/positioning/take-off points would be gratefully received.

I thought you wanted an oil cooler, not an intercooler?

Ringo you can fit a sandwich plate with a thermostat in it so your not cooling the oil straight away

just sounds like extra things to go wrong and leak if engine gets hot it will dump heat out through water jacket, my beetle manages with no cooler and only 4 pints of oil in the sump!

James - I've got one fitted - I was just wondering if that's what faggie was talking about.

Yep!

Oil cooler not intercooler, you can tell I need a bit of guidance on this subject.
