Anyone know if these would be any good at running mulitmap? (is it called multimap? The OS map software as used by Doug, Clive etc)

The program we all use is Memory Map. I don't think you would have any trouble running it on one of those. MM works well on Windows XP and the main requirement (I think from memory) is that the minimum screen resolution is 800 wide.

Can anyone think of any disadvantages of that type of computer? (the tablet type i mean)

I imagining the 'pen' thing could be a bit useless whilst bouncing around off-road, but i'd probably get a usb/wireless mouse anyway.

Im thinking, detach the keyboard and mount the screen somewhere useful and its quite a good solution for navigation. Is there much requirement for the keyboard whilst using Memory Map?

If you have a passenger then they can zoom in and out on the map and move to maps of different scales. A touch screen would be very good as there are icons you can tap for these functions. There is no way the driver can do this and drive at the same time!

What you will need is a GPS receiver which can either be connected by USB or blue tooth if you prefer something wireless. The only time you need to use the keyboard for MM is if you are doing a search for a place otherwise it can all be operated with a mouse or stylus on touch screen.

Al, you seen the Dell Mini running the Hackintosh? That\'d be a nice platform if you could dual boot it - else wait for this?:

On second thoughts I don't actually know whether you can tap the icons on the screen (I am looking for a more technical spec), but you could definitely use a mouse. I believe Doug has come up with a novel solution too.

My current system is based on a Dell PC (3Gz P4) which I 'reduced' in size, ditched the mains PSU replacing it with M1-ATX see http://www.itx-warehouse.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
I've got it set up so that by powering the PSU - toggle switch - which boots the computer (see M1-ATX) and with MM in Start Up you're straight into the program.
The screen is a normal PC screen that needs 12vDC, mouse is optical. I have tried various trackballs, wired and wireless.
One problem with the mini ITX form carputer and the like is the number of USB sockets, for my various bits I find I need five: mouse, keyboard, GPS, VAG-COM and one for the pen drive.

Bit cheeky but this thread reminded me I've got a USB GPR receiver I no longer use if anyone's interested, perfect for a laptop
