Cold start lever

What does it do and how do I know its connected? My van has had a new engine (1.9 diesel from a Passat) put in. Now its gone colder again my van's not starting again. :roll:

Hey Binka....


it's kinda like a choke for diesels - increases the fuelling and alters the timing a bit if you look at the injector pump you should see a cable coming off the back of the pump (between the pump and the engine) which is the cold start... the cable on the top/front of the pump is the accelerator :wink:

As far as I know most engines should start without the cold start so I would say it's worth being sure the glow plugs are sorted 1st...

Thanks Doug, found it with your help and it does look attached. Hubby is currently trying to warm the engine up with a fan heater and hot water bottles so we can get it to a friend's house for him to sort the glow plugs out. Not really sure his method of warming the van up will work but he's convinced it will .

What engine code is the engine?
The cold start has never been connected on my van and recently I've had a few cold start problems.. There is a good trouble shooting flow chart in the Bently manual which helped solve my problem.Mine turn out to be the glow plug weren't staying on long enough. Give me a minute and I'll try and post the info up.

There is another bit for if your glow plug lights not working, if you need that bit then let me know.

Thanks for that flow chart, I think its a bit beyond me to be honest though. We've got a voltage measurement widget and I mentioned to hubby about checking the voltage at the glowplugs but he says its too difficult for him to get to the glowplugs. I had to go to work today but hubby did manage to get the van started after warming it up with the hot water bottles.

It can be difficult to pull out fully when the engine isn't running. Try pulling it at the same time you crank, and it may pull out a bit further.

We got the van started today and drove it to the local garage where its going to have the glowplugs looked at. :ok Thanks for the advice.
