Hi,
Looking to help a friend who hasn't got the money for a Scooby yet. I am assuming a normally aspirated golf 1.8 or simular would be a easy and cheap job. Any ideas down this sort of line?

you need the diesel bits to fit inline 4 so unless you got these floating about it's quite expensive and tbh not much different to a wbx, lot of work for little improvement hold out for scooby

Yea, I agree, but the guy is not mechanically minded, so it would fall to me to fit the scooby and even at mates rates, its going to cost him a chunk of change.
He's facing the bill for an engine freshen up and new exhaust, it was starting to add up, so I was hoping for a cheap solution, certainly would be easier if he had a diesel!

ive got a diesel bell housing and input shaft you can have for 65 quid as a start.

from what ive seen of late its going to be the diesel hoses you would need that are hard to get.

So to switch from a petrol to diesel what is required? Can the petrol tank be used?

engine bars and engine mounts which means welding in fixing plates to chassis to do it right, petrols don't have the plates fitted
diesel rear gear selector rod and cup assembly and diesel gearbox mount again to do it right plenty don't bother and put up with worse shift, more important with 5 speed
I think the diesel fuel tank is the same as carb engine so you don't need that but 1.8 is injection so you may be better off with petrol injection tank with bigger return and swirlpot

some sort of intake system that will filter and fit in space
and with the 1.8 you'll need the fuel pumps off the golf, but the T25 doesn't have a lift pump in the tank so they can suffer from fuel starvation and overheating fuel pump ime
and you may have to clearance the chassis to pass the manifolds, big hammer may be enough
I reckon it'll cost at least a grand and a lot of f ing around for a revvy engine that doesn't suit the vehicle
you can get a recon wbx for that and stay stock and then sell the wbx when the scooby can be afforded, or pick up a used engine for half that ammount and take the risk for as long as it takes to save for scooby conversion
Putting in a scooby makes sense to me but having being involved with a 1.8 and 2.0 conversion I would stay well clear, there's nothing they do better than the wbx and fitting them is a pain, you'd be better off with a diesel inline 4 imho and I don't do diesel so I think that's clear
