Could anyone tell me what this is for please? Also i assume this shouldn't be getting warm but could do with some confirmation please.

Don't know what its for Jed but they can get warm depending on what they are running. Even the coil inside can get a little warm.
Sometimes however thet can get warm due to a poor connection at the contacts. A clean up of the contacts usually sorts this.

That's odd. Don't think the seats are heated but the relay is getting warm. Is positioned the second plug in bottom left. I am getting a strange wiff on burning plastic every now and again and can't find where it's coming from. I am hoping it's my cooked vc but i want to find out for sure as it's a tad worrying.

It will be a poor connection causing a high resistance and thus localised heat build up, I would disconnect the battery at the weekend and have a look at the rear of your fuse/relay panel could be causing a lot of damage

According to this page it is either, as Rob says, a control unit for heated seat or a buzzer (ambulance)

Thanks for the info chaps as i dont have heated seats or a buzzer, i will take it out to see if it kills the hot wire smell and see what stops working

The number 18 relay is in the number 8 socket in a blade type later fuse board,if this helps. Thanks for your help Ian

the relay in socket number 8 is our friend the load reduction x contact relay number 18
but it provides current to x circuit from main power line 30 to x circuit
x circuit goes to
light switch relay 7 fog light relay
fuse 14 heated rear window
fuse 13 heater fan
fuse 11 wipers
fuse 12 rear wash wipe
and probably others
it's basically an additional ignition switched power supply circuit of additional circuits
it looks like it's just a switching relay so probably just tired

One thing i have failed to mention and its just dawned on me is that the van has had some Projek zoo double square headlights fitted by the previous owners at some point. When i switch the main beam on the headlights turn off and only the side lights and main beam show, do you think this could be related? or should i pop it up as a separate question?

Interesting lighting arrangement !!
With Aidan mentioning Fog light power circuits it almost sounds like your set up is wired a bit like fogs, but not necessarily correctly. ie fogs should only come on with dipped beam, spots should only come on with high beam and should switch your fogs off.

Don't know if that's any help or makes much sense...

Yeh it does, thanks. I have just solved the headlight problem by finding out the headlights on the ProjeK Zoo Addition only have a tiny hole in the back that takes a single feed spotlight bulb Do you think its ok to have the headlights and main beam feed for the outside set of lights on the same conection on the bulb after all the switch that turns them off turns them on if you follow my ramblings

I'd be temtped to start again

Wire as normal spotlights through a relay, so that the inners come on with the outer main beams, and whilst you're busy with relays, do the "relay / headlight mod" (if it's not been done alreday) The fogs should go out on high beam and come back on when you dip, if they're switched on (but I can't remember the wiring for that bit )
