gearbox problem

i'm new to the vw scene and i have a 1984 t25 and the gears are a bit of a pain,it takes me a while to find reverse(thats a lottery between 1st and reverse!!)and i get a crunch sometimes between 2nd and 3rd,i've been told you can buy a bush kit for the gearbox of ebay for £50,will this help my problem gearbox????

when was the gear oil last changed, if you don't know then do it, see how bad the magnet is, then worry about the linkage if magnet's nice and cean

thanks for that mate but i haven't got a clue about engines,i have a haynes manual which i can consult but i'm not sure what you mean by check the magnet???

'The magnet' is part of the gearbox drain plug on the lower rear face of the box, this collects all those missed gear filings and parts of bearings. Before undoing this (with a 17mm hexagon 'Allen' key or hex drive socket) you'll need to undo the fill plug on the offside of the box.

I'm actually removing my gearbox complete shortly to replace clutch and side seals where axles bolt on and fill with fresh oil. Will photograph the job extensively and bung it in the WIKI - may help some.
