Temp gauge issues

As I now have another years MoT on my van (miracles do happen) I thought I would fix a few other issues that have been bugging me for a while. One of these is the temp gauge has never worked.

After reading other posts I was expecting to see 100 Ohm resistance across the sender terminals when the engine is hot. I let it run untill the fan cut in but measured 8 kohm at the sensor, the connector in the engine bay and the multiway connector behind the dash (pins 3 and 6). This makes me think the sender is dead.

Next to check the gauge I disconnected the connector in the engine bay and put a 100 ohm resistor across the brown and yellow/red wires going forward to the gauge. With the ignition on I expected the gauge to go mid range but it didn't move. This makes me think the gauge is dead.

Basically I cannot determine whether fault is with gauge or sender. Of course if could be both but does anyone have any suggestions before I start replacing parts??

Thanks

Mark

Hi Have you seen the wiki on this, my advice is to get another sender in there and rule it out that way.

a tenner should rule out the sender, otherwise you end up chasing your tail. But a good thing to check is the dash circuit board there is a multi plug above your right knee which takes all the various info to the dash pod where this connector attaches ti the flimsy plastic is a famous place for corrosion and badness unclip and take a look for corruption and broken circuit tracks

couple of thoughts, make sure you are testing the correct sender if you have the plastic thermostat houing with two fitted. Coolant sender faces front.

You should confirm the the brown wire at the coolant sender connection is connected to earth.
