Hi I have a 1986 1.9 DF, It has been stood still since a week before Christmas as I was away for the festive period and then working in Scotland and then Kent so haven't been able to give it a turn over or run until today so I checked all the levels oil, water, brake/clutch fluid, oil was low so I topped up, put the battery back in after a good charge. It took 2 goes to fire her up and when she started there was quite a loud tapping noise which did'nt go away and a bit of white smoke. Now should I take it for a good run and see if the tapping stops or leave it idling for a while.....or is it fecked.
Cheers, Mark

your tappets have drained whilst being stood.a good five or six mile run should sort your problem..

Couldn't go for a drive

No pressure at all in the clutch pedal, bled it topped up fluid and still no change can get gears when engine is off but can't when engine running, had a new clutch about 5 months ago, had the wheels off and can't find any leaks around the brake pipes hoses, check clutch master and slave cylinders no signs of leaks any ideas ???

probably slave failure
when you press the pedal does the lever on the side of the box move - if not then it's hydraulic issue, if it does but still can't engage gears then it's a clutch fork/release bearing/clutch or spigot bearing fault

Aidan thanks for the advice, I have checked and the lever below the slave and it does not move I have re-bled the system and although there is some pressure now I still can't get it in gear so it looks like the slave has failed, going to order a new one now and will try to fit it next weekend.

I don't want to put a damper on it but unless I am mistaken a failed clutch actuating cylinder should leak fluid in a simple seal failure. If no fluide is prsent it is more likely to be the clutch master cylinder which is just a bit more difficult to fix.

Cheers Wolfie, I had the master done last Feb and there is no fluid on the cab floor and all the unions are dry, there where no obvious signs on the slave but the floor was wet due to rain and its all pretty crudded up underneath so there could be a leak on the slave but after I bled the system it was covered in fluid possibly hiding a leakage issue

But I'll have a look at the master when I do the slave.
Cheers, Mark

You either have a knackered hydraulic pipe to the slave from the master or (as Aiden say's) the slave's not working properly, that's the easiest thing to check ... they often seep into the bellows and you don't see it unless you squeeze it.
Ian.

my slave went followed a few months later by the pipe splitting above the petrol tank, if you fill it with fluid and press the pedal you will hear / see the fluid leaking if the pipe has split.

Cheers Ian thats looks like the culprit to me, I gave it squeeze and a load of fluid squirted out. Now I got my new slave but I went and fupped up the thread

so I think I have knackered the new slave as it won't seal between the hydrolic pipe and the cylinder, and the connector on the hose is now bare

.
Whats the proper name for the connector and where can I get them from or is it an new hose jobby, just off to sit on the roof for a while and gather my thoughts

Don't go for a pee will you

might pee on the van from up there
Its translucent, and quite long not like the short copper one shown in the haynes book.
