Thanks both, would a junior hacksaw cut through it?.And the reason? we are going on a long trip [Africa ] and i could not sepperate the shaft from the outer cv joint when i replaced the cv boot.if something goes wrong with the front diff [it locks up for instance] we will be stuck!!

Mmm.. I think I would prefer to cary a full driveshaft in that situation.. or replaced it with one you could take apart.. or perhaps carry a worn out outer cv so at least you can replace it.. to be 3 wheel drive...
Why coldnt you get it apart? the circlip is a bit of a pain to get at, but then it should come off the shaft with enough force..

A junior hacksaw... poss with enough blades and time.... Take a normal one and best quality blades... get some 24 and 32 tpi blades.. 32tpi for harder materials... if you really have to, cut away from the hard machines ends...

Yes, i had the shaft in a vise, circlip pliers, and fbh, still would not come off.
typically i have left it too late to get a spare outer cv [a week before we go!!].
are the front and rear shafts the same?.
