Thought I would just put a comment on about the best £12.00 I've spent in ages.....I bought a pair of Osram H4 Night Breakers for the outters on my Westy California with a view to carrying out the famed relay mod at a later date. I wasn't expecting too much from these but was pleasantly surprised by the difference they made...I reckon a 30% improvement as a conservative estimate, which has made all the difference to the weak lights (4 square type)
Mine were bought off ebay for under £12.00 the pair posted.

I understand that Philips also do a comparable bulb called 'Philips Xtreme Power' which is said to be at least as good but slightly dearer.

I was planning on getting the Philips Xtreme Power ones, so thanks chap, just saved me the best part of a tenner!

Osrams are really good, with the relays fitted they're even better !!

I have single round lamps with a couple of spots wired to high beam, but the Osrams make everything that much better, I've used them on a few vehicles over the years. I got mine from Wilkos for about £12 iirc

I just brought a pair those and they are fantasic

I recon at least 50% bright on full beam

Wonder what the difference is between osram silverstars and osram nightbreakers? I've got the silverstars with a headlight booster and relays fitted. I've kind of got used to them since the upgrade but all this week been driving a landrover defender and the lights on it are so yellow!

silverstars are the standard ones
nightbreakers super duper ones
got the nightbreakers too big improvement

As far as I can glean from Osram the nighbreakers are the replacement for silverstars.
Hope to have them in soon once all silversatrs have gone (not long)

Used the same seller and the bulbs arrived in just over 18hrs. Fastest I've know Royal Mail to be other than when delivering useless uber-expenisve insurance quotes

Gandolf.....as you have probably read from the link....
WHY the Relay modification?: the original VW wiring runs directly through switches (no relay was fitted and the wiring is adequate at best) and as such the output to the bulbs suffers from some voltage drop. In effect, the supply voltage is often well below the bulbs optimum requirement which means light output is commonly only 70-80% of the bulbs design capability.
Fitting relays minimizes this voltage drop and allows for 100% of the bulbs designed output, combining the mod with the higher output bulbs users reports a substantial overall improvement.
