Carburettor help please.

Hello again!

Just to fill in on the problems I've been having with my van:
Severe loss of power, untill it's warmed up it won't go over 40mph, when warmed up the power occasionally cuts out, followed by a violent judder if i don't get my foot of the accelerator quick enough. Particually bad up hills! Also it often cuts out at junctions/traffic lights etc when I come to a complete stop. Engine turns over again fine. Often when I first start the engine i need to keep my foot on the accelerator till it will idle fine, and will often need 2 or 3 attempts.

Right today i started changing the fuel hoses and front filter. I read Covkids write up on the filter in the carb but there isn't one on mine! I have no idea what carb I have, can't find any writing on it anywhere, but it looks quite different to the one in the manual (I have a 2l AC).
This is what I have got (oppologies for the poor pic!)

While i was looking about on the carb I noticed the tube that runs from the carb to the distributor (vacuum line?) was barely on the the brass pipe from the carb, i took it off completely and the rubber was a little split where it was attaches, so trimmed a bit off the end, and now it won't go back on very well (presumably why it was barely attached in the first place. Problem is the tube is obviously too narrow for the brass pipe! I tried a 5mm fuel pipe and that fits perfectly snug, problem is the other end where it goes into the dizzy, has a REALLY narrow pipe, so what was on there fits perfectly snug! Any ideas what I can do about this!

I also found another problem, there is fuel seeping out of the carb :? , I've indicated in red where the leak is:

I'm hoping I just need a gasket, but I've got no idea what gasket I need as, already mention, I don't know what carb I have.

By this time I was out of light!

Any help with any of this would be massively appreciated!

Billy.

Sort that vac hose out before anything else

the petrol leak is also an indication of an air leak.

you have mixture issues so sort out the leaks first.

Sort the petrol leak first before you have a fire ! Looks like you need a carb overhaul to me. http://www.gasure.co.uk/carbrefurb.htm

Thanks Kev, regarding the vac hose, do you happen to know if there are converters available, to join hoses of different thicknesses together, so that I have one to fit either end?

eg.

DIZZY---------------------------o=====================CARB

--- = thin hose
o = converter
=== = thicker hose

Hope that makes sense

proper vacuum hose should sort it, however if it is so different then a piece of pvc tubing with a little vac hose either end
whats the difference between the two ..2mm, 3mm?

It's only a 2mm difference.

As kev says proper stuff should fit. You have a single weber conversion, lots of people have problems with these, gasket you possibly need is for a weber 32/36 progressive. Was it in the cold weather and are you sure its not icing up?

Could be crud in it somewhere or it could be a cheapy copy as they are prone to go off on one for no reason. See if you can find weber written on it somewhere and where it was made.

PS should have an auto choke, not sure how to set them up mind but should be worth a check. Have a search online and you should find what you need to know.

Cheers Damien, I have had a look today to try and find out what carb it is, and couldn't find any writing... I shall have another look though, try and find "Weber".

It wasn't particularly cold today no.

Cheers for the heads up about the choke, perhaps thats why it is so poo until it has warmed up.

A quick search has also revealed that a “fuel pressure regulator” would be a good idea with the electric pump. Anyone know if this is the best thing to do, or just change the fuel pump for a mechanical one since the pump is disconnected at the mo anyway.

Ta!

hi mate,

the usual reason for an electric pump is that the mechanical has packed up, and a replacement could not be found....the alternative is electric pump.

So be careful about reconnecting yours - there is a good chance it won't work

Would one of these not do the job?
http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... 10391.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Much cheaper than a £70 pressure regulator

Or would that just be a foolish move?
