electronic ignition on my beetle

Hello oh wise ones!

Right, it has been a particul arly slow day at work, so spent the lunch break on fleabay. In my random search of beetle and fastback t3 etc I came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 169wt_1165" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

is this something worth considering?
is that expensive?

And are their wild claims of better timing and fuel economy true? I understand that I am not going to see immediate vast improvement.

I just wanna know if its a mod worth making, or do I leave it stock. (I don't understand points and condensors either!)

thanks for any comments

I fitted one in place of points on my old mini. It removes the need to adjust the gap and does maintain performance and economy. Sort of fit and forget.

Downsides are they can burn out if used with the wrong type of coil, when they do you'll probably be sat at the road side refitting your points etc

Also would look into what other motors use a similar dizzy body and if they had a similar thing fitted as standard. Aldon ignitor for mini was £60 similar module made by lucas for petrol landrovers (same dizzy body) was £8. Look down the listing and they give you a list of the cars it will fit then see if you can get a original/cheaper type one.

Not a bad price depends on how well they are made. Petronix ones are about £70. In theory once fitted the timing should always stay correct and the engine usually runs smoother due to all the cylinders firing at the correct time. Slightly better fuel consumption due to those reasons.

I looked at the price of electonic ignition systems for my bug, thought sod that and ripped the guts out of an astra dizzy in the local scrappy. :wink:

ahhh that sounds interesting.

So, how did you know an astra dizzy would work?
And did you pinch the astra coil as well?

Got plenty of scrappy's round here...so may be worth a try!
