Fuel filter

Hi
Just getting ready to road test 1.9D in my '86 Doka. She doesn't like starting much, but runs well when going. 2 thoughts about the starting; 1) do the glow plugs work well 2) is the fuel dropping back. The only filter seems to be an inline plastic bulb type with a paper filter. Should there have been a proper bolt on cartridge unit included in the original mod (not mine!) and if so, what's recommended?

I'm sure there's an answer out there- just my inexperience showing!
Thanks,
Adam

Hi,
Taking all the diesels that I have had experience with as examples you would expect a cartridge type of filter and mounting to be fitted in the main fuel line typically in the engine compartment. This is quite important not only to trap particles but to trap water, and to drain this off every now and again.
You should be able to get hold of the filter mounting from a VW dismantler. Were you asking other questions about starting ? Am on-line so come back now.
Regards
Dave

Hi,
You are probably having a cuppa. I have to visit my local scrap yard so have to make a move, but before I do, some further thoughts.
You will gather then that there should be a factory fitted type fuel filter holder mounted on to the vehicle, which has a filter with it.
If you can get the filter holder from a particular model, say a 1.6D transporter you can look up the filter required and get them from Halfords. They carry lists which show the fuel filter for each vehicle.
If you were raising a query about poor starting then there are a number of issues, and if you search the mails within the forum you should get pointed in the right direction. If there are glowplugs which are not working, relays not doing their job, poor electrical connections, old engine with low compression, perhaps a need to use the cold start device (some seem to need it, some don't) you can see there may be a number of factors involved.
Depending what kit you have the glowplugs can be checked without removal, removing certain ones of these can be a pain.
Anyway, raise your questions and I will see what I can do.
Cheers
Dave
