Met this little lot on my trip today.... They all drove over the mountain and down into the valley as I did but only one of them was able to get back up the way they came in!! They had to go another way to get out.

love it.
landys get good press and are obviously proven off road but what is it about the syncro that makes it so capable. is it simply that the engine is in the back or is it just clever underpinnings.

In this case narrow tyres and difflocks. Very few of these guys had difflocks

Having pushed my defender to its limits on many occassions (sold it now im afraid) i have to admit its not the best off road in certain situations. My main gripe was that it falls into the same ruts as tractors and you bury the diffs far too easily. Getting recovered by a suzuki sj was not my best moment (on more than one occasion).
The transaxle diff lock (if thats what its called) is good for normal situations but there is no substitute for diff locks cross axles and a VC between axles.
I enjoyed learning to drive the landy properly - they can go very well If you know how to drive them - for example, driving through thick mud should be done by pumping the gas pedal like its a switch. Very brutal but very effective.
I enjoyed the land rover club meets because folk were very enthusiastic - but i enjoyed mud club meets better because there was a huge range of 4x4s. Sadly, there were no syncros in the meets i attended.
Land rovers are cheap - and i will always remember my landy fondly. It got me and H involved in off roading and we had a great time. As do lots of other people.
If i had the cash i would definitely buy a syncro camper - and im sure the folk you went out with are probably thinking along those lines now they know what a syncro can do
Good work for going out with a load of landy's! I hope they werent the snobby kind. Actually, it would have been fun to watch their faces if they were!!

I bet they were surprised when you drove out and they didnt eh Andrew???
Ringo, you'll have to come over to one of my meets for a ride round.. its not that far....
Yeah.. stopping isnt much different to a car... the scooby would get off the line easy... the Syncro gets off the line with minimal wheelspin if any... (only 78 bhp to play with..

) stopping with the winter tyres on was better than the scooby with ABS on its "summer" tyres... even though the syncro weighs quite a bit more..
