Just sitting here and thought about the Reimo camper I have as it`s got the water tank underneath
Having repaired the leaking side valve in the summer there is water in there this winter....
Should these be drained as a matter of precaution
Thing is it was a devil of a job to get the pump primed and working after filling following the valve repair

Along similar lines. Does anyone drink the water from the tanks on their campers or just use it for washing up?

yes we do why?
The tank is cleaned and sterilised once a year
we also use it twice a month so the water is being refreshed regularly.

Ah one big lump now .
I got a 50ltr tank made and fits inside my van , forgot to drain that so I too have one big lump .
Do we drink it? Yep but only as in boiled for coffee and cooking and drain it every couple of weeks, carry bottled water fro plain drinking.

I used the tank on my old van for drinking - as Kev says, as long as it doesn't sit unused for too long and the tank is cleaned and rinsed annually then its a waste having the tank IMO

Puri Clean for sterilising

and don't forget to rinse it thouroughly

as for frozen tanks, I don't think you need to drain them. I'm only guessing, but an empty tank will encourage bacteria growth more than one with a little water rinsing around it.

sadly, drain it is the answer, turn the electric off and open the taps too. that way the water has got somewhere to go as it expands! what's the problem with the pump? what type is it? swap it for a sure flo?

as for drinking water out of the tanks, that's definately what it's for, either in tea, coffee or in a glass! like kev's ours gets used a couple of times a month, so the water is always swapped out fairly regularly. if you drain the tank it starts to smell ans taste funny, if it's got something sloshing about all the time it keeps it clean, even if you drain it when you get where you are going!

i've just had to read that three times to make sure it didn''t say you chould ""pooh"" in the water tank!

I understand the boil and drink bit,but not the taking a dump in the kitchen/bedroom/lounge!!!

that's why i woudln't have a bog for ages, eventually we had an extension and now have an en-suite kitchen/bedroom/lounge!

we had a rule, no dumping in the porta loo if we were staying on a campsite.

I forgot to drain the water tank in my westie until 4 days ago.
A couple of days ago found the pump frozen solid AND burnt out (nasty smell in van and small hole in side of the plastic pump housing....a couple of lessons I learnt here.

1.Drain the tank before first frost.
2.make sure the pipe from the pump to the tap is drained as well as the tank.
3. Protect the pump with a fuse lower than the 16 amp spur it is on now.

I can only guess at what happened was this....I drained the water from the tank at a time when the water had started to freeze . The water left in the pump and the line to the tap froze expanded and caused the pump pressure switch to think the tap had been turned on and start pumping It couldn't turn so it burnt out but without pulling 16+ amps.
Doesnt look from the pump damage that there was ever a likelihood of a fire but it has made me think.

Thought i would share this with you in case it is of use.
