The van started to sound a little unusual on the way home tonight, once home i popped off the engine cover and traced the new sound to a very small blow from the exhaust gasket where the exhaust meets the head on the n/s, is this a diy job or for the sake of taking all the skin off of my knuckles am i better off getting the local exhaust boys to do it ?

I would never let the local exhaust boys touch it..mainly cos unless its quite a new exhaust something will snap off or sheer or be rounded off. I recently replaced an exhaust and well worth checking threads on here for good advice. Is it side of the engine nearest the rear? If so in fact on either side you may find some bolts going into the head and some nuts on normal manifold studs,. Either way, i suggest soaking everything in penetrating fluid twice daily for several day before toucking it, then carefully start to ease off the nuts/studs, if they stick, reverse or even tap then try again. I'm suggesting great caution but must say the above method worked for me. If they snap or get stuck etc then u are looking at buying stud extractor set etc. I used some rust resistant not quite hexagonal locking maifolld juts to re-do it afterwards as these will not rust badly, lock up and have an integral washer at their base. like waltraud says do it your self... heat or plus gas is your friend here

As you look through the engine inspection cover its to the left at the front .


i used to work for a recovery company that also has a service centre i'll pop in and see the boys as i still get on really well with the boss and i'm sure he'll let me use one of the ramps and tools to sort the old girl out.

Woooo great, the one right next to that rare and expensive thermostat housing (on late WBX's)

No i'm fairly sure its not near the stat housing, when i say its at the front i mean towards the front of the vehicle n/s ( passenger side ) it looks fairly accessable its a DF motor not a late WBX

my friend who works at an exhaust place said he wouldn't touch my van with a barge pole.

try some firegum it has worked for 3 years for me.

be very carefull with exhaust places they wanted nearly a thousand pound to supply and fit an exhaust on my t25 .plus 25 pound to replace each stud on the head .i used to be in the trade .so i bought it myself a complete exhaus from jk and a helicoil kit and saved over 600 pounds .try to find a local vw camper garage or se if you use some ramps in the garage should only take a morning to fit they look worse then they are

Ok i recall this one to the 'front' of the engine on the near side /lhs. Its not a bad one to do as there is room to move above and underneath with a socket and space to make sure the penetrating fluid gets right in there. Again, as with most jobs, my sense of it is that its mostly in the preparation so prepare well and be returned with less probs! I used gaskets from Brickwerks and did not use firegum or any other stuff as the gaskets themselves should be good if of the right quality. I'm assuming that if you have to do this one you will probably ned to also release and move the same part but on no 1 exaust outlet but on the other side of the engine- same treatment. If by any chance you find the exhaust is bad / rotted I would strongly recommend the Brickwerks stainless steel replacement sections which are good value for what they are, good fit and will never need doing again if you fit them carefully. I did and have never regretted it. Good luck, Tim
