:(
Its dead. I popped out to move the T25 and its dead! I did have a problem starting it the other week one early morning. When on turning the key it gave me a loud metal scratching noise? So i rocked the van but with no joy. And the only thing that got it going was starting it in gear? I did just tryed this, but did not work this time round :idea . Any help with this would be good. I wait for anyones help, Cheers :D

A little more info would help!!!
Engine type?
Diesel? does glow plug light come on.
Dead? does it turn over? slow or quick?
Does it try to start? cough splutter?

Screeching could be starter motor not engaging properly, but without hearing it...????

Sorry dude, Its a 1600cc TD Passat engine. The glow plug light has come on from time to time on the run up to now. The first time i did not start i had not a thing. So rocking it and started it in gear and got it going. But the second time after leaving it for about 10 days it was really slow tuning over and then not a thing. But all the lights are working fine? But i have got it on charge now to check. I dont think its the battery but i am not sure. But any help at this point will be good.

Thanks for that i will be taking another look tomo. The battery is now fully charged. Its all bolted on nice and tight etc. I have jusy got to look at the terminls to make sure the have not been broken or droped of? I do now think its the starter but i could be wrong as the glow plug light was on dim when i last drove it? I am very tempted to take it to my local garage to get it sorted. I am just so skint at mo. Never mind, watch this space.

I presume this was after a charge up?

the connections to the starter need cleaning up or the cabling is corroded... pay particular attention to the earth strap

Looks like its going to be towed of the drive! I can not even move the bloody thing. The drive is on a slop and the T25 is backed in, right in tight to the wall. I am board with this now. Anyone got a gun :pimp

Have you tried the first 2 things off the list from the 'reluctant starting' link above?
Might be useful to get - at least - get battery and starter motor off the list before giving the van 'the bullet'.
Don't get even - get methodical!

'Pop under the driverside rear wheel arch and check the signal wire to the starter motor is connected to the spade connector on the solenoid.

1. Turn key to first position- red dash lights not coming on. Battery flat or electrical connection faulty, i.e. battery leads loose or fuse loose/blown

2. Turn key to second position (start)- no "click" and starter not turning over, See 1, starter motor seized or electrical connection to starter motor loose.

If connections are secure and not corroded give starter motor a couple of hits with hammer or similar to "unstick" it. Suspect worn starter motor bush.'

Worth a try?

Madame Rose - at the end of Southend pier - she say - 'perserverance furthers' - :)

Diesels fairly bombproof. Not owned a T25 diesel but have other diesel vans and its usually crap starter motor, duff battery or wire off the fuel pump. They're finicky about any of those. Does sound like you need a new or s/h starter but at this time of year colder temperatures can make a poor battery useless.

Right i think i have sorted it. This has been doing my head in as i have ckecked all the conections over and over. I checked the battery. Checked the starter etc etc. But what it came down to was the copper wire on the back of the starter was rusty?? So i cut this back tell i found good clean copper wire and popped on a new conection and all is good at mo. But in the mean time checking all the ele's over on the T25 i some how broke the hazard swicth. So i need a new one of these as this will drain the battey when the engine is off.
What happy days i have had. But touch wood it will be ok now.

I would just like to say a big thank you to all of you that helped out :ok
Have a good new year :pimp

Check battery condition. If you put a volt meter / multi meter set at 20v on the battery posts - after the van has been sitting over night - do you get a battery voltage between 12.5 and 12.8 volts?
If you start the engine - at engine idle speed (900 rpm on mine) do you get a reading of 13.6 to 14.3 volts? This will give you an indication as to whether your alternator is charging your battery.

Is battery holding charge - or being drained?
What happens to the starter motor - when your trying to start?

Keep a list of what your working through - what youve tried - and what happens with the van - and it will get worked through -

These are cold temperatures. If the battery isn't good, you may get it to charge and even reach the correct voltage but its cranking ability may be virtually non-existent. Winters tend to show up a duff battery. Try and borrow a known good one or if its old, consider a new one.
