Anyone know a 'quick fix' or is it a pull the heater out and strip it job?

Here ya go, friend, quick and dirty, just the way we like 'em.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... =fan+drill" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The easy fix is on the first page, the rest is a degraded food fight thanks to the resident asshat there at Samba. He can't tolerate anyone fixing something he sells the parts for, besides being a first-order idiot. Every forum has at least one.

mine squeaked for a year and then seized completely......
Just replaced it with a new one from Baxter - they're only £50 odd quid.
Refitting it is a weekend job if you haven't done it before....(lots of other things to do whilst the dash is off).
But then it's done for another 20 years.

Yeah you all seem a fairly cheerful bunch. We had a good crowd over there up until about a year ago, the good ones outshone the bad, but nowadays it seems more and more contentious. Maybe it's the recession, but I doubt it; some folks are dicks and that's all they know how to be. The Idiot Terry Kay is a fixture, though, can't get rid of that POS.
Anymore if I think I can help someone i just speak my piece and bug out. Not as much fun as some good-natured back-and-forth, though.
If you want to find yourself swimming in testosterone, go on over to the Samba Perfromance/Engines forum. Bring a snorkel.

TCL thanks very much for finding the quick fix, although I doubt whether I have the cojones to drill the hole blind, even though there is clear space behind it. So it looks like the dash out when the weather gets nice, although when the weather gets nice I'll probably think that it can wait a while......

In the meantime I'll turn the radio up!

Just taken the dash and heater unit out on mine and must confess it's not that difficult to do.
Thought it was going to be a real ass of a job.

Hey a BIG thanks for posting that up tencentlife
Mine has been intermittently squeaking since I bought the van 4 years ago and it drives me nuts !
As soon as we get a day when it's not raining

I will give it a go, nothing to lose
Now we need a similar quick fix for squeaky front wishbone bushes that my MOT man said are in good order, just squeaky. I tried lubing them with rubber friendly oil to no avail

You're quite welcome, of course!

Right, the squeaking says nothing about their state of wear. I have an '87 GL with 300k miles on the OEM bushings, they squeak like mad but the pivot bolt is perfectly centered. The thing that vexes so many are that even new ones start the squeaking after only a short time in use.
So, here's another samba thread which, in stunning contrast to the one I linked above, is a model for what a good internet discussion can be; openminded, generous, and productive. Neither puffery nor rancor (you'll also notice that certain names aren't seen among the commenters). Lots of revealing info about the UCAB's and several solutions being tried by various people, including yours truly. Take a look, I promise you'll learn a lot:
