Hi there, just purchased a 1990, 1.9 petrol holdsworth with 77k on it. It sounds sweet as a nut but i was just wondering what sort of problems might start to occur around or after this mileage. Also, what is the best type of oil for this engine with this amount of miles?

Service it diligently and it will last another 75,000
I use 15/40 mineral in the winter and 20/50 in the summer
I would now start to change ALL the fluids.
Oil, coolant, brake and clutch and gearbox oil.
Have the timing and mixture checked.
plugs, oil filter, petrol filter, leads, fuel lines, dizzy and rotor arm
and fitted a new code 096 starter battery with 75a/h of umph

I've just replaced my old 1.9 (for a 2.1) and with 140,000 on it and was still great.

Things to look out for ..
Electrical connections every where, especially earths, will have been undisturbed for thousands of years so they will play up.

Mine is a similar milage and all I had to do in the last four years apart from service is replace the starter motor, refurb the carbs new brakes all round.

I have also had it LPG'd and lowered but that was a want list.

Service it, gas it, fit a heater and use it !

Don't be a 'I SORNed my van in September ... it's now March and there's only the tyres left' wally, inactivity kills old vans. Thing's rot, things seize and things leak.

Get to an 80-90 camp ... not a big show at first (no offence Kev but you know what I mean) but a smaller social type occasion ... we'll all talk to you AND be more inclined to help because we know you are a real person.

Thanks a lot for the great advice, i'll put it all into practice. Its great to know that help is out there and rest assured it will be needed! I like the sound of the small meet. Where and when does that take place? Also, my van has been lowered, any potential problems with that? You can tell i'm all knew to this can't you!!!

The Club trips etc are to be found in a Members Only section ... fill in the 'joining the club' form at the top of General Chat mail it to Mocki and (when the slacker has time) he'll sort it for you

There are meets at least every month all year round and if you tell folks where you are (to be strongly recommended ) folks near you may even have mini-meets

I have a 1.9 petrol and using it daily is defo the way to go, things will wear out but if you've half decent mechanical knowledge a haynes manual a good tool kit and a direct link to this site you'll be ok, they're so easy to work on you should never have to pay a garage bill.

mines a 1900 petrol with 150000 on the clock so far with no issues at present but anyway a company down south whos name ive forgotten and has been recommend by other members will supply and fit for about a grand so no worrys!

A thorough and extensive check over/service at the beginning of ownership with particular emphasis on the following:
Coolant condition/change
Drive belt condition
Steering and suspension mountings, couplings etc especially upper wishbone rubbers
Brake pipe condition
Brake condition generally
Tyres/wheels condition and rating (is it fitted with car tyres and wheels or properly commercially rated parts?)
Coolant hoses and housing condition for leaks (at this age hoses rot and go hard)
Battery/Leisure circuit/alternator condition
Wipers...yes something as simple as
Plug leads/cap/rotor arm
Braided earths and wiring generally exposed to the ellements
Petrol filter
Gearbox oil
Clutch (check) leaks on master/slave cylinders
Blower motor operation (they are prone to seizure)

And then....thats just the mechanicals....body is next.
