hi i was driving home from work and i noticed a loud rattling noise from underneath the van, has anybody got any ideas. It's not the gearbox that was changed last year. what about the propshaft? If thats the problem roughly whats the damage for parts and fixing, thanks :(

Think you'll have to give a bit better description than that I am afraid.... could be prop, cv joint, loose bolts, tinware flapping, exhaust tin..... something wrapped arouns a shaft.. etc etc etc... Id be checkin cv joint and prop bolts are tight first and making sure that nothing is about to fall off...

i've had a quick look underneath and nothing looks out of place, the noise is definately coming from around the prop area, sounds quite nasty like metal turning and very loud. i dont want the van to breakdown on me as i cant wait to play in the snow!

the rattling noise is very loud now, you could hear it worse when the rear wheels were spinning on the hills on the snow and ice and transfering the power to the front. i would like to take my van to a syncro specialist but syncrospares and syncronutz are over five hours away, anybody closer to n wales ?

get under and grab the prob by the front uj and feel if there's any play in any plane, it will be obvious if there is as there should be no play other than a few mm rotational backlash against the two differentials

yes there definately a bit of play there and i noticed an oil leak aswell, i,ve been to a local garage a long time ago but to be honest i dont think they,re any good with the syncro . I need to sort it properly for germany in april. How much is the parts for repair roughly ? :(

have you checked all your wheel nuts are tight ? also worth a look is the brake disk splash gaurds if they've rotted through and are vibrating against the discs, is there a stone caught between the disc and gaurd ?

do these syncros have a bearing half way along the propshaft if so have a real good look at that but i suspect that youl need to get it up on axel stands leave it ticking over in gear and get underneath to pinpoint the noise

There is a bracket that bridges your prop guard rails near the gear box. Make sure this hasnt been knocked up or is full of ice or frozen snow rubbing on the prop. If not then tick it off the list.

no not yet but i'm working 7 days a week at the moment, i did see the a thread on wiki about the propshaft vibrations might take it off and get it balanced and sorted and go from there. I've already changed the engine and gearbox might aswell carry on and do whats left !
