Starter motor

Starter motor has died. Ive got a T25 1983 air cooled 1.9.

Anyway I have seen my starter motor and ive been looking to replace it but so far on the sites ive looked at they all have an additional attachment which I am told is the Celanoid but I dont have that on the existing.

Questions

1. Will this cause a problem if I buy one?

2. Anybody know a supplier for reconditioned?

Hi,

The Solenoid is built in to most starters and typically performs two roles :-

(a)Engages the pinion with the flywheel thereby turning the engine over and ...

(b)Switches the large current which the starter motor needs to rotate.

I would expect that the solenoid would come with the starter motor, and you would buy it as one piece. The large power cable
which delivers the large current to the starter motor is the one which bolts on to the solenoid. There is a far smaller
spade type connector also mounted on the solenoid which is the one which causes the solenoid contacts to close and the starter to turn when you operate the starter. If replacing the starter disconnect the battery before making a start.

So if I havent got one as my starting motor is just a cased in one tubular cylinder with no additions how did mine work? Of course it just occurred to me perhaps mine isnt genuine VW and could have come off anything?

Hi,

I have experience with a 1.6 Diesel and a 1.9 Petrol Transporter but not a 1.9 Air cooled. However vehicles are vehicles.

Would suggest that you go on to the Just Kampers site and locate the starter motor - J10541 is the only one that I can see without a Solenoid.

If it is like this and you follow the large wire on yours back from the starter you should come to a solenoid mounted on a bulkhead somewhere. Another large wire will come in to it which is the feed and a small one that causes the solenoid to pull in.

If it is like this when your starter rotates, the pinion will spin up the starters shaft to engage with the flywheel.

Have a quick look without freezing to death, and I will help you if I can.

Thank you for taking time to look one up for me. This does indeed look like what I was expecting to see. I had been on their site but hadnt come up with this one.

Will get it ordered asap. Many thanks. Wont be getting under the engine though for a week or so tho! It will be bump started as I live on a hill untill then.

Hi,

If that is what the starter motor looks like, then sure enough you will have a seperate solenoid mounted on the bulkhead somewhere
and this should not come in to it.

Glad to have helped.
