Hi
My t25 (2.0 a/c) is making quite a loud clattering noise following a run at the weekend. Looked underneath and saw the above. I'm wondering if something has fallen off.?
In the second picture you can see a thin metal wire that now seems to go nowhere - just hangs down
Apologies if the answer's obvious but I'm what I think they nowadays call "technically challenged"

That concertina thing, believe it or not, is a thermostat!!
The wire hanging down is part of the mechanism that shuts the flaps when cold, and as the engine warms and the thermostat expands, the flaps open letting more cooling air over the engine. If the wire breaks, the flaps remain open, so it will take a little longer to warm up, but won't overheat due to closed flaps. My guess is the wire has broken, so your flaps are now open! Could have neen llike this for a while. That nice organe wheel that you have pictured is a guide wheel for the thermostat cable.
Can't help with the other stuff, sorry.

Thanks Emma.
I'm getting a bit worried now because presumably the broken thermostat wouldn't cause the noise.

No unless part of the wire was dangling on something rotating or the flap lacks a spring and its that rattling. Might be a tappet, try using a long handled screwdriver with handle pressed against your ear and place other end on rocker covers and other areas to locate the noise?

All that rusty metal would benefit from a drop of something like dilute hammerite or if you are less fussy a light coat of used engine oil.
