The moose looses about 1 litre every 3000 miles of oil. I suspect the turbo since compression seems fine, and she starts up a dream nowadays since some sound advice on the forum.
So I can guage how much is too much to loose how much does your 1.6td loose in a service cycle? and where do you thinks its leaking from?

well if it ain't coming out faster than you can get it in......


Sorry mate, I really have no idea! My petrol is leaking from the front pulley seal (if thats what its called) so will have to be done soonish. Just worried what else they will find when its done......

A litre of oil every 3000 miles does not sound too bad to me.
It is an old-school motor and they do use oil.

I have a relatively new recon motor and I get through about a litre about every 5000 kilometers which is when I get the oil changed.
The oil usage does vary with the driving style, motorway driving uses more.

I would say ours uses about as much as yours and Titus's. it doesnt leak it has excellent compression and the beast runs fine so I can live with it using a bit, as Titus says they are an old design of engine so will use some.

my 1.9 DG goes through a litre every 250 miles It runs on LPG, which does effect oil consumption a bit, and both my rocker covers need doing, as does the crank wheel seal, and the clutch seal, and the piston rings, and.....

Anyway, as the engine runs fine, easily does 70mph and has the right compression and fuel economy, it's better to leave it be until it explodes than tinker with it and (as Ermie says) open a can of worms!

My van. It uses more oil when on gas than on petrol. Guess the heat of LPG combusting does even more to slacken the piston rings!

The VW 1.6 and 1.9TD are not 'old technology' at all.. certainly not in the piston/ring dept... I doubt that's where the oil's going. There's no reason they should use more oil than whatever you think is 'new technology' - basically the block and pistons are same as modern engines, almost identical apart from the piston crowns.

Probably, most is thrown out/burnt off during cold-starts, especially if the glows aren't working well (knocks until runnng cleanly on all four?) and then the trubo seals willd rip when standing and that gets burnt off too...

1 litre per 3,000 miles... Better than a pint per 1,000 considered good on petrols a few decades ago

TBH, I'm always amazed how 'little' my 1.9TD uses, all things considered (e.g. working under boost at an horrendous compression ratio!), and expect it's about same as yours, and mostly for the same reasons

Sounds like a pigment of your imagination. Our's has run on gas for years and never used more oil on gas than petrol, if anything it's the t'other way round. The only oil usage our's has is when you've just changed it and the 4.5 litres finds it's own level down to 1/2 way between the 2 marks on the dipstick.

I think the idea might be more along the poor Upper Cylinder Lubrication from LPG fuel sources

Mine loses nothing between oil changes that I've noticed. Never had to top up although I was informed when I bought it four years ago that it was a replacement engine. That may be why.

Not a bother with WBX engines Clive, so Gasure have explained to me.
Agreed, it is poor in upright engines. I guess that's why flash lube systems are employed
