Well i took the van for its MOT this morning only to be told that they couldn't test the van as the front suspension being lowered and the front spoiler wouldnt clear the ramp. And it sprung an oil leak...so it had to go to another Nationwide Auto Centre (as they had a flat ramp)...and hey presto its failed...on the following;

1. O/S rear fog lamp not working
2. N/S & O/S front indicator's wrong colour (What the blithering heck!!!) Those lenses and bulbs are effin new!!!so what they going on about....ANYONE??
Image
3. O/S front dipped beam not working
4. O/S front headlamp aim not tested.
5. Emmisions not checked due to oil leak.
6. N/S & O/S front anti-roll bar bushes split causing excessive movement.

Advice notes:

1. O/S front brake compensator corroded but ok as doing its job.
2. Both front coil springs corroded.
3. Oil leak (caused by right rocker cover gasket).
4. N/S rear drive shaft outer CV boot split.
5. O/S front hella fog lamp lense cracked ( can't find a new one anywhere)....

The engine runs very quiet now and a good run on M62 on thursday...MOT runs out on 16th Dec...shame there's nowhere open tomorrow to collect the parts..

Don't seem too bad, with the indicators thats probably not down to them its down to a machine to test 'em. Put your old ones back on for MOT.

I'm sure there will be some more constructive comments here ..

But my ten pence.. Indicators.. that's rubbish, as is oil leak and corroded springs

some motters have never seen a vehicle over ten years old

I'm going to get the CV boot changed and have a look at the springs as they are H&R springs only fitted 3 years ago (so can only guess the red paint has come off)...order the parts tomorrow from JK or GSF.

hey - you only have one rear fog light.....think its drivers side. Although the bulb holder is there on the passenger side, there is no electric to it.

Doesn't sound like they've failed it on too much really. Apart from oil leak, all of that could be sorted relatively easy - bit of bashing around to get new anti-roll bar bushes sorted and a driveshaft to remove (might as well repack with fresh grease and fit a new gaiter both ends while its off). Indicator lens, well yes.

What size are the bushes 19mm or 21mm as i've looked at brickwerks website at poly ones not rubber ones. 2 Sizes are given and want to order the bits tomorrow.

The oil leak is their reason for not testing the emissions, if its leaking oil and they do they full throttle test and it results in damage they are liable, also I forget the car test amount of oil leak permissable but its not much. Likeiwse if they dont think it will fit on their lift they wont take a chance, otherwise again its their liability if they trash the front end.
Headlamp not working fog lamp not working both grounds for refusal of a certificate. I tend to go to places (when I can) where they do not undertake mechanical repairs. That way they have no gain from a failure.
Probably hadnt failed the quota this week so yours was a good target.
Sometime I will tell you about kwikfit and Peugeot 305.

So when did that enter an MOT test?
I have white indicator lenses using an orange bulb, with a white marker light in them as well.. for the last three years.
my mate has smoked lenses , again no issues

I'd be changing my motter, not my indicator lens

A tester has the right to refuse to test a vehicle or conduct any part of the test if in their opinion it would damage the vehicle, test equipment, or compromise the safety of the tester and any assistant. Never said it was part of the test. There are other people who have done the course at Bristol other than me, I think Martin (Red Westy) is one, and Fulsunian is another.
For example if the vehicles structure is excessively corroded and you dont feel happy about lifting the vehicle then you can stop the test at the time you discover the problem.
All tests are not on four post lifts. My cars and motorhomes for the last 12 years have been tested at D A Prout and sons Dymock Glos where they are done over a pit, I would imagine Billy knows the garage it has been there for about 60 years, before that it was the blacksmiths.

No, but you implied it
Why would a tester have to rev an engine on full throttle?

We had one as a runabout, diesel estate back in the late 80's.
Took it for test and it failed, Ronnie Hauges place in Sheffield, I would imagine T'Onion at least knows the place.
Barry Hicklin, foreman tester at the time failed it on a few things. Bits didnt arrive on Saturday till too late for me to fit them and have a retest.
A friends daughter was taken ill in Oxford and he asked us as a matter of urgency if we could him there. As I had fixed the defects I wasnt that concerned about driving it but I got my wife to take to a national chain of parts suppliers who did MOTs and were open on a Sunday morning.
They VTG30 that she came back with reckoned it needed three shock absorbers, an exhaust system and two tyres.
All these things had broken since its original test on the previous Friday afternoon.
Strangely they were also things that the company could supply and fit off the shelf.

I do apologise Kev perhaps you are right I am thinking of a diesel needing to be taken to the governed speed in order to check emissions.
I am also not sure if rear driveshaft gaiters are in the test, I dont have my manual here. Also being out of the trade now I sometimes get mixed up with HGV plating regs.
