Changing gear linkage from 4 to 5 speed

Hey folks,

done some searching, but haven't found what I am looking for....probably searching for the wrong thing!

Gotta change the gear stick, box underneath and first half of the gear linkage from 4 to 5 speed.

Friend may be able to come round and do it tomorrow, but would like to have a read first, as I like to know what I am dealing with. Anyone got any tips....not done anything gear linkage related before!!

Off to read Haynes and the bently now.

remove spare wheel
remove 4 10mm nuts securing selector box from underneath and the cable tie for heater hoses.
remove bolt securing rod to stick , 10mm & 13mm
lift stick out from inside cab
undo gear rod joiner
pull apart joint and puul rod out through front of van(yes it will go)

reverse steps to refit

Billy,
thanks for the step by step

but if it really is so simple, why the three spanners for adjustment in Haynes.....

It, and Wiki, say that it is important to mark it all up before taking to bits....obviously I can't. And reading the instructions on how to adjust left me cold! Is it as difficult as haynes makes out??
If I take it to bits and bugger it up, i have no gears to get it to a garage.....

Anytime I need to readjust shift linkage from scratch, I loosen the center coupling enough so the 2 rods will move independently.
let the trans go to its 3/4 (or 4/5in this case) neutral position.Thats all the way out in neutral of the shift lever on the trans.
Next I gently bungee the shifter into its 3/4 or 4/5 position by hooking he bungee to the rt door. This puts the whole sheebang into its proper far right neutral position. Tighten the center coupling and start fine tuning the adjustment from there with the shifters plate on the floor.
If you cant quite get it into , say 2nd gear easily..Loosen the bolts a tad on the floor plate and pull the shifter towards the left door. (Gotta be careful not to say pass or drivers door here, huh..since we be bassackwards over here)
Retighten the plate and try it..Same works for 1st gear..Just pull the plate over a bit with the shifter and retighten..Works pretty well evry time I am stuck doing it..No Bently weird measurments to deal with.

Thanks for the input! :ok
Think I am starting to understand.
Transaxle - you are talking about adjustment, inside the van, at the gear stick, Yes? Or have I got that totally wrong?
You don't mention the splines underneath at all, I am putting a Different front rod on.....so it will be total guesswork when it goes back together.

How do the splines work? Can't find much in wiki other than to move them TINY amounts. But how do you know which way to turn them?

Sorry for the numpty questions.....but trying to understand a mystical mechanism!

Em as mentioned previously you have to put the stick in the right place at the same time as putting the gearbox selector ball in the right place, which is easy enough with two peeps, you do this with the collar loose at the splined joint. What I would mark is the length of splines showing on the old front rod and when you mate the new one put it in that far as a starting point, this is where you can alter the length of the shift slightly and thus the position of the gearstick knob, so if your knob is hitting the radio this is where you alter the length too, hopefully using this starting position it will be about right.
4 speed box defaults to 3/4 shift plane due to the spring inside the box, on the 5 speed the default is 2/3 plane and there is no spring pressure at the box to take it to 4/5 plane so the person underneath the van pulls the selector ball and cup as far out of the box, ie towards the wheel, waterpipes etc, whilst at the same time the person in the cab holds the gearstick in the neutral position for 4/5 and the person underneath nips up the bolt on the collar at the splined joint and it should be right.
4 speed slightly easier to set becuase the box itself wants to be in the 3/4 plane.

5 speed sometimes easier to set in 2/3 plane, which is gently push ball and cup into gearbox to the stop point before spring pressure felt and person in cab holds neutral in 2/3 position and collar bolt is locked there, this can be easier cos you are not working against the spring thing at the bottom of the gearstick that should be just touching the side of the box

Aidan,
thanks for the input, and I am glad to say its done!! Van drives in all forward gears, and goes backwards when it was supposed to!

easier than expected too...with a bit of pointing in the right direction (thanks Mark), the old was off and the new one on and driving within the hour!!!

Doing as Aidan and transaxle suggested, with the stick in 4/5 neutral, and the box in neutral, John wiggled the spline joint together, tightened the clamp, and miracle of miracles, I had all gears and no knuckles smashing on the radio!! So thanks for all the help.

Take care out there...

Hi all..... i have just been reading the tread and I wonder if you could help me? My truck has started popping out of second gear, it goes in fine and stays there until you take your foot of the accelerator... can anyone offer some advice on how to fix this?

cheers,
Hoss
