ive had problems with my starter/ring gear ever since i got my van
it would never catch first time, sounded like starter spinning but not kicking out.
ithe van was a 16d which i converted to a 19d(1y).
swapped flywheel from 16 to 19 when fitting.
reacently it has been getting really bad, and sometimes wont start at all.
bought a brand new starter to see if that helped. it didnt.
pulled my flywheel off tonight to have a look and noticed the teeth are all worn right along the top.
i always thought the teeth chipped on the edge?
i am thinking now that the starter teeth are just spinning over the flywheel teeth?
is this a normal wear pattern for them? or is it possable that the wrong flywheel has been fitted sometime in the past.
would really apreciate any help on this ,as i am stumped

at the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, are you sure that you started off with the correct starter in the first place? If it was wrong and you've replaced it with the same (wrong) one, nothing will change. Other than that, the culprit/s could be; starter bearing (bellhousing if fitted) knackered, ring gear knackered, solenoid not engaging sufficiently (pre-engaged starter only), starter drive gear knackered (but you've replaced the starter anyway), wrong flywheel (which you've pointed out) or finally aliens (if something is wrong and you can't sort it...... blame aliens ).

Could be the wrong pinion on the starter motor. Definitely happens as I had a starter reconned for a vintage perkins about 2 years ago and it wouldnt work. people at the AEs had put on the wrong pinion. Possible your van had the wrong starter bodged on off another model/configuration of engine box and you have replaced like for like. Probably worth PMing Simon or Aiden to see if they know whether there are different ring gear diameters etc.
If it is just a pinion its an easy fix providing the ring gear is servicable which it may not be, I would need to see it.

does anyone know the part number for the starter so i can check against the one i have.
