I cruised around the wiki but couldn't find exactly what I needed, I just experienced a total clutch failure on my 1992 T25 Syncro, everything has been fine until now, just changed into top gear going over a short hill, theres a small "pop" from the back of the bus and the clutch pedal suddenly becomes rock hard, there's no give in it. I drop her out of gear and coast down the hill to a safe stop on a drive. Pressed down on the pedal double hard to see if any movement can be had and off blows the plastic tube underneath the reservoir, covering me in fluid!

It sounds to me as if the clutch and/or thrust bearing has destroyed itself, can somebody who has had this experience please confirm this is true and possibly recommend the best make of clutch to replace as I don't want to do the repair again! Sachs/OEM???

Also is there a problem with towing a Syncro, I am sure I need a flatbed truck to take a 4x4 for repair?

I'm not an expert but I'm sure Aiden or someone else who is will be along later. However, I know the two bolts holding the clutch slave in place can work loose. One of mine is missing and Sonic23 had a similar problem recently too. If this has happened to you it could have jammed the slave and your forcing the pedal has overcome the pipework...

Easy thing to visually check but beyond that it will be out of sight.

As for towing, I think you're right that without a de-coupler you will cause damage. You could drop the propshaft off if a flat bed is not available.

Towing with all four wheels on the ground is not a problem; its no different to what happens to the drive train under normal driven conditions.

Van got picked up by the AA today, its probably not as bad as I thought, I'm showing my unfamiliarity with the 2.1 as opposed to my old air cooled T2. Guy reckoned it was the clutch actuating rod that has broken, possibly the actuating arm but definitely not the clutch itself. Live and learn I suppose.
