Have had this happen to me some years back, though I didnt get hit, it was dangerous to say the least, I only ever use them with the greatest of respect, usually at arms length literally.

they can be nasty bits of kit! ive had some close ones with them. Could of been worse at least the blokes van didnt hit the deck

That's a known risk with Hi-lifts, maybe they didn't read the manual.
