what goes under the gear stick...

and is it different for a four and five speed gear box?

Had a four speed box that grumbled and groaned itself into an early (25 years) grave. :(

Picked up a 5 speed box entirely by accident, but the garage bolted it in and I can get all gears (honest) with nothing else changed or modified.
BUT>> its a little clunkier than my other five speed from factory. So, is there sommat different under the gear stick? I am guessing its in that silver box above the spare wheel...And what do I need to change?

thanks

different gear stick and different box and different front half of the front to back selector shafts, basically you need a five spped linkage and stick and associated parts, one on for sale, if not here then on by, but clunkiness could be due to alignment as much as anything else.
Major difference is there is no detent spring pressure between 2/3 and 4/5 on a five speed box so default position is 2/3 whereas there's a little additional part inside the four speed so default postion is 3/4 (same as 4/5 on 5 speed)
it's possible to fit the top hat with the box in situ which will make it more positive to maybe cope with having the 4 speed stick and linkages.
