Speedo unit Question

HI All,
Sorry for the rambling first post but i am in need of help
I have recently got a 1986 holdsworth Villa, I noticed the temp gauge did not work but put that down to a faulty sensor, I exchanged that still no joy, so I removed the speedo unit, only to find its one from a scrappy ( has the tell-tell perm pen labing on the base) I also noticed the wiring has been bodged , and the wiring loom does not match the PCB on the speedo, leading me to belive I have the wrong unit fitted.
Can anyone advise what should be fitted the one I have does not have the clock, but has the lower (rather than side) mounted conecter for the loom.
Also on the connector from the loom on the van the 4th pin in is not connected to anything.
Any advise you could provide will be gratefully recived before i waste money on the wrong unit on fleabay
G

Can't really help on the speedo front without seeing it, sounds like you have the wrong clocks but you might be able to swap the wires over to get it working fine. Does the fuel gauge work ok?

4th pin on mine is looped in with the 1st pin on the PCB

PS if you see a Aircooled orange panel van with white wellers on give us a wave :ok

Many thanks for the quick replys , fuel gauge sort or works but does not show a full tank only ever gets to 50%, will try and post a pic tomorrow.
Did not want to hack the loom about to much ( its bad enough as it is) also they have cut a section of the pcb out on behind the gauges

Search for "spannerboy" on here and give him a call, he's a breaker in guildford might be a better bet than ebay. Then you could probably have a gander at the wiring loom and check colours on 14 pin terminal to ensure yours are in the correct order if its been chopped about. If you need to change them around you can unclip the side of connector and slide terminals out rather than chopping em off and joining them up.

If you have some missing connectors i have a couple of spares that can be joined on if needed.

an 86 bus will be on the change for early/late wiring loom , so can you be sure your bus has the right clocks?

if everything seems to be working apart from the gauge then its possible the clocks are right

the horizontal connector is the later type and will almost correct if its a late c reg
do you have blade or ceramic fuses?(ceramic are long bar ,beetle type fuses, blade being a small plastic square with terminals out the bottom)
if you have blades then from memory these all had horizontal dash connectors.

to fit the diffent clocks you need to move some of the wires round!

does your engine have 2 oil pressure switchs? if so then you need the circuit that sits behind the speedo , this is the 'buzzer of doom' that detects low oil pressure over 2000rpm , comonly plays up so as yours is damaged so it dosent work. if you remove it completly then you have no oil lamp!

86 vans can either have this fitted or not, the dash is rewired so it dosent use this ,but on the engine you will only have one oil switch

worth noting tho that if your van has had a new engine it may have 2 switches fitted

Pin 4 Vacant (counting from drivers door side with dash fitted) is the later loom post 85 and dash has the horizontal connector. Sounds like you have the correct dash but check fuse type as suggested by Billy739. Other clue is the Module marked 43 fitted in fuse box. If you have this fitted in fuse box then I would bet you have the later loom and correct dash but with temp guage fault.

pin 4 is vacant on the loom but not the current clocks
fuses are the blade type and yes i do have module 43 fited

So from what you are saying I need the later unit, is that the one with the clock??

here is what I have
