What gearbox

Just wondering going back on one of my old threads, what gearbox would be suitable for my 1Y engine? Ideally for good cruising? Could I use a petrol box?

Thanks phil

yes you could use a petrol box and transfer the input shaft and bellhousing
check the list of codes on brickyard you can then see what is what, basically the lower the final drive ratio the faster it goes per rev so if you have a n/a diesel with a 5.5 ratio box eg ABR then sticking in a 4.83 eg ABD would be a useful upgrade, a 4.57 would also be good, but everyone wants them so more expensive generally and finding a good one hard.
I've built a 4.83 box with the TD 0.78 for one of my 1Y customers and he's very happy with that in a pick up.

I run a 1Y engine with a DK code gearbox but i needed to change the shift rods and fit up as i have a late T25.Runs a treat on the gearing.

dk = 4.57 with 0.82 fourth = 3.74 actual top gear

4.83 with 0.78 = 3.76 pretty much the same, but no messing with linkages and can be upgraded with oiling plates, 4 pinion diff, locking diff, lsd etc......

aap 4.57 with 0.82 is 5 speed eqivilent of DK but there isn't a watercooled 4 speed the same, I guess because the wbx revs longer but quieter so can carry the extra revs to achieve the same result as Aircooled

vw became more conservative with gear ratios as the van aged, probably because the old engines were showing signs of being over geared and the vans became heavier with the watercooled and more blingy bits like electric mirrors and windows rear washwipe etc..

i want that one!!! Just done a bit of math from the last post it would cruise at 70 around 3500 rpm does that sound about right??
