Hi
Just wondering if OEM T3 alloys, 14", ET30 need spacers or longer bolts/studs?
Or do they just bolt on using original/steel bolts/studs?

no they fit straight on

my carat alloys.fitted straight on.the front and rears.with no spacers.but dont use the steel wheel nuts as they are radiused.you will need tapered ones for vw alloys..

There was an interesting thread (argument might be more appropriate) on the Brickyard concerning the standard OEM Alloys and the stud length. Mine is standard and torqued correcty with no problems but it was pointed out that, even using the correct nuts, very little of the stud thread is actually used to secure the wheels (think it was two Turns of the nut and thats it or some very low figure like that). Quite scary when you actually check it and I was a bit suprised to say the least. Mine is standard but the poster had his replaced with longer studs as he wasn't prepared to take the risk. No need to use longer ones IMO but worth checking that your existing stud threads are in good condition and replace them if they look worn or damaged on the lead in of the stud.

bet he was using the wrong nuts.if they are alloys made for these vans then the studs will defiantly be long enough.as they would of been an option when the van was new.and vw would not of changed the studs had you chosen alloys.you wont get many turns if you use the wrong nuts.ie radiused.

out of interest i have just removed one of my wheel nuts and it took seven turns to get it off.the brickyard guy either cant count.or hes deffo used the wrong nuts...

It was a bit of a 'ding dong' with a lot of heated arguments and, as every one pointed out, this is how VW fitted them (and I'm happy with that!) but IIRC the nuts supplied for the wheels were partly the issue as they were supposed to be the correct ones which is why I mentioned it. Sure Baxter will remember the thread as he maintained that the standard set up was fine but IIRC ended up changing the studs for him anyway. The argument was the amount of thread that actually secured the nut onto the stud and wether it was adequate (if the cap was removed from the nut a lot of vacant thread was evident).

I've got standard (radius) nuts & bolts on VW 14" alloys. I have 6 turns at the front & 5 turns at rear. But it does look scary.
Was waiting to hear Baxters thoughts but he must be busy or lazy!

the vw wheel nut seats are cut to fit tapered bolts.so radiused will not sit correctly.you really need to get them changed.

I know Rob. I was just giving people an idea of what I was getting on standard steel wheel bolts.
I would get some if Brickwerks site would let me bloody pay for them!!
