There could be hardened grease in the opearting arm pivot, release bearing pivot or mainshaft splines that softens as it warms up...
There could be many other reasons too, even the fact your engine is not pulling as smoothly at low rpm when its cold...
More revs & a bit of slipping when cold if that last one is the case.

thanks for info . i though it was the cluch on the way out witch i can do with out . i will have to get some
one to have a look at it to see if it is what you say and put it right . is it a big job . thanks .

To replace a clutch isn't a huge job, i've just swapped my gearbox removed clutch and flywheel, dropped engine out, new seal and spigot bearing and reassembled. Took about 4 hours to do the taking apart and putting back together. Mines Aircooled so would take a bit longer with watercooled stuff in the way and its the first time i've done it.
Its not like modern cars they seem to of thought about how you would remove it like most other vw's of the time.

mine is water coold and is a dg engine 1991 komet and i have no were to do it and it is the wrong time of the year
to lay out in the road . so i will keep my fingers crosed as i am going to clacton to morrow 70 miles . got a new car but it is the wifes . but i like to drive my van so i will take it and see .

mine was contaminated with oil from the worn gearbox seal
new clutch, gearbox seal and mounts ... drives great
