Just got hold of a tilley lamp where is the best place to get paraffin

A parafin shop No sorry not got a clue..You using it in van/awning...I wouldn't

Any garden center will sell it as it gets used for heaters in greenhouses. As already said i would not use it in your van or awning

I have a Coleman lamp (similar to Tilley) and I use mine in the awning........................whats the problem??

So long as you have it on a table or other surface and not near roof or walls there is no probs

Most hardware shops stock parafin, as do quite a few garages. Use ours in the awning but I always light them outside as sometimes they can flare up until warmed up properly. Brilliant lamps for camping, wouldn't be without them!.

I knackered the mantle on mine yesterday. Will have to hunt around to find a new one....

Its a really old one with a priming dish to warm it up before turning on the mantle. Im not very good at lighting it yet without completely smoking up the glass!

Loads of mantles on the bay of fleas Ringo...There's also a hardware shop somewhere in Leics that stocks all manner of gubbins for Tilley's. Top tip for lighting easily...Just when you think it's hot enough to try turning on the parafin give it another couple of mins!! Works every time!

Ive just got a very very old one out of my dads garage, when mum moved. had three spae mantles too. hardware shops should have parafin and camping shops etc. im gonna let a bloke look at mine first. im a bit chicken when it comes to flames . no harm in being cautious

still learning but whats the differance between 164B and the 164X mantles as i need to get some is 9pound for 5 a good price

You will get any spares you need from 'The Base Camp', The Lamp Loft, Ockendens, 50 High Street, Littlehampton, w.Sussex. There is a web site - just put in 'base-camp.co.uk' Phone 01903 723853. Very helpful but check the web site first so you know the limited hours they work.

The most important accessory needed for lighting a Tilley lamp is patience!! You really have to get the spigot hot for it to light properly, especially in cold or windy weather. Also, turn the fuel tap on VERY slowly. You should hear a 'pop' inside the mantle. If it flares, just turn the tap off, and keep heating.

These are great lights which give off a lot of heat too, but best to light just before it gets dark. The Coleman petrol / multifuel duel burner lamps are better in my opinion, but you have to be confident about using petrol as fuel.

All produce CO2 and water vapour as by-products of combustion, so adequate ventilation is a very sensible precaution.
