I might replace the original with another VW type - anyone know what the options are?

I have a Scirocco one on mine (same as MK1 and early MKII Golf and Passat)

Looks OK but you cannot see the top of the instruments as well, esp the temp gauge
You have to swap the horn rings over and fit a peg (read, self tapping screw ) to make the indicator cancel thing work, but they are easy jobs.

Mk2 golf or scirrocco simple swaps, just need a spacer ring (plumbing shop) and extenders to bring indicator/wiper stalks closer

I've got a US spec caravelle wheel, I think it's slightly smaller that standard but it's more padded.

Depends on what you start out with.
If your "blessed" with the horrid, hard, thin, plasticky, massive Transporter wheel ...then a swap for a slightly smaller padded wheel from a model with power steering might serve very well. Those are dia 42 cm (opposed to 45 of the transporter wheel) and nicely padded. Plus they swap straight over without any other modification.

Made the swap myself recently and it's like driving a new car, much more comfortable to handle.
All the switchery still works without mods and you can still see all the instruments.

Thanks all - lots of food for thought there. Porsche is a bit above me but I like the look of the Carat.

There is a carat one currently on German e-bay ...not cheap though at 69 euro 230396109964

or you could go for a standard 42 cm (PAS) wheel eg 160375047769

Same thing happened to me this week.
I found it was the cancelling pin on the steering wheel.
I have now fitted a in line fuse to the grey /black wire.
