Tightening belts

Time for the spring service :?

Some of the belts are feeling a bit loose and looking a bit elderly, so Ive got some new ones (alternator and waterpump). My understanding is that the tension is adjusted using shims? Im not really sure I get this at all - I dont quite see where the shims are going or how they're pulling the belt tight.

Can someone give me a brief run-down before I take it to bits!

junk the 2 belts and fit 1 long belt,it makes tensioning easier, and you only need 1 belt,cj.

didnt know that!

That is junking the two belts for one!!! Anyway if you have bought them just add or remove shims till you get the required 10mm deflection I think it is on a new belt > I still dont know how it works but it does put the spare shims safe where it tells you in the Haynes.
Tss done D
