Morning All
Finally made the decision that the old crappy solex carbs need to go and i am now in the market for a set of DRLA's but am not 100% sure what one's to go for...
Ive a 2.0ltr stock CU motor so am i right in thinking that a set of 36's will do the job or would i need to go any bigger for possible future mods to the engine??
Also what should i expect to pay for a decent set that are pretty much ready to bolt on and is the accessories kit for the type4 (filters, linkages, manifolds) on the eurocarb website suitable for a wedge??
Cheers Guys any help would be appreciated , Going back to bed now though lol

Hi Holeydub,
You can use 36 or 40mm drla carbs on a stock cu engine.
The first thing I would buy would be the excellent dellorto tuning book from eurocarb.
The easiest way to buy would be as a complete kit from Jim at Stateside tuning. Its over a year since I've priced carbs but I would be suprised if you could get everything on and working for less than about 500 quid. Its not cheap and there's loads of hassle on the way but the end result is fantastic.
You can get drlas from ebay quite cheaply, it took me three sets to make a good pair though, as they tend to be off old alfas, with seized jets and screws etc. You then need to change jets, emulsion tubes, etc etc.
Getting manifolds short enough to fit was/is a problem, in the end I used Type 4 empi ones with narrow inch and a half air filters from vw speedshop. This setup fits if you cut out the middle supporting bar of your engine lid.
As soon as everything is on, you would do well to go to a rolling road to get the final tweaks spot on, or let a good carb man like Steve at gasure cast his beady eye over them.
I've spent a lot of time playing about with jetting and recently managed 23 mpg on a road trip.

A few people have done this conversion on here so theres plenty of advice available.
God luck!

I've done this previously i think for a fair bit less than 500(mind u was a while ago so perhaps not) , i've got the Dellorto tech book and u could have it for £5 + post if u like, pm me. I got the linkage, manifolds and filters from Manchester volkswagen services, they advertise on Vzi. Personally, i would look on Vzi on the thread about carb swaps/jetting swaps as there are often people , probably on here as well who will have venturies and jets to swap. I can't quite recall but think that for a 2 ltr i had 36's with 28mm venturis for torque and MPG as opposed to speed. The tech book is essential reading before you do any setting up. There is a supplier from Italy, possibly on ebay but dertainly you will find him from Vzi who can supply i think, pre-cleaned carbs with your required venturis and approximate jets. Tim

cheers guy's you've been a real help, i've managed to find a set of 13month old 36's with 30mm chokes on ebay which have previously been set up and run on a 2.0ltr Aircooled (they're also on vzi) they are just the carbs as he's uprated them to 40's as he is now running a bigger engine after the previous blew up. Apparantley they've only done about 100miles?? He does want £285 posted so not too sure if they're bit expensive as euro carb do a complete setup for £540ish for a 2.0ltr a/c and i'd only be saving about £75 with buying the other bits needed...

also be aware you need to boss the inlet manifolds for the vaccume hose for the brakes.
when i did mine i had carbs 100 quid off ebay
manifolds and linkage were 65 ish ea (but now are much more) csp parts
short air filters 20 quid
breather box kit 35 quid (essential for crankcase pressure reduction)
rebuild kit for cards plus a sonic bath came to 125
jetting on the rolling rd i cant remember but i think was 180 with the jets.
i had 36 drlas with 32mm chokes
not cheap but worth every penny
