Replacing hose at top of 1.9 dg thermostat

The small bore externally braided hose that is above the thermostat housing(by bleed valve) is looking wet...

When changing it is there coolant in that part of the system or is it just part of the expansion system??

there's coolant but you won't lose much, as long as rest of system good don't worry about bleeding etc...
worst part of the job is the crimps that vw fitted it with originally getting them off without breaking the spigots is the thing, and of course vw use a non standard pipe size (internally)
